Content and Information Architecture

When it comes to the web, content is king. The success of a website often hinges on its ability to quickly and effectively provide visitors with relevant content. It must be well written, well organized and always up to date. The Web Communications Department can offer assistance to help you take a fresh look at both the information architecture of your site (how the site is organized) and the actual content itself.

Why is it important to update the information architecture?
Well-organized websites make it extremely easy for visitors to find the information they’re looking for. Unfortunately, many Tufts websites are organized with the University’s internal structure, rather than the site’s visitors, in mind, resulting in complicated websites that are difficult to navigate.

How will the information architecture be determined?
The Web Communications Department can help you review the information architecture of your website and assist you in determining what your peers are doing. That research, coupled with the strategic objectives of your school/division, will provide the foundation for the information architecture. The goal is to develop a common approach to information architecture across the University while enabling groups to tailor their site organization to meet the needs of individual users.

Can I use my existing content?
Most of the content used across the University’s websites was written for another source and repurposed for the web. The goal of this initiative is to start with a clean slate and develop a content plan that is specifically focused on the web. If schools have existing content that can be updated or modified within the plan, it will be used. The rest of the content will be new.
