Streaming Media At Tufts

Web Communications offers hosting of streaming media files for Tufts web site owners. Streaming media allows video and audio files to be streamed to media players on remote computers and devices.

Who can take advantage of Web Communication's streaming media services?

Streaming media services are available to any Tufts web site owner who is a full-time staff member in a recognized Tufts school, organization or department. The media files must be used for the purpose of furthering university academic or administrative business and site owners must be willing to assume responsibility for the files. Please review the University's streaming media policy carefully for complete information.

How should the media files be encoded?

Web Communications cannot provide any support for video production or encoding. However, a video producer has provided some tips and guidelines for encoding that may be helpful as a reference.

What kind of support is available?

Web Communications can provide basic verification as to whether a video is streaming correctly upon upload. Due to limited resources, any technical support beyond that cannot be guaranteed. However, our staff may coordinate with UIT to resolve certain problems with streaming as time and resources allow.

Web Communications is unable to perform any video conversion or encoding. Any media files supplied should be web-ready. Please refer to the Streaming Media Policy and Guidelines for further information.

Web Word: Streaming Media

Streaming media is audio or video sent from a streaming media server to a client connection. Unlike audio or video files that are downloaded as large units to the viewer's machine, media is sent in a continuous "stream" and played as it arrives. The viewer watches or listens via a media player, an application often set up as a browser plug-in.
